Chicago is one of four US metropolitan areas with two Major League Baseball teams, the others being Los Angeles, New York, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Of these, only in Chicago and New York are both teams located within the city. Chicago is the only city to have had more than one MLB team each year since the company’s inception. American League 1901 (New York hosted one team from 1958 to 1962, and Los Angeles only from 1961). The Chicago Cubs are members of the National League, while the Chicago White Sox are members of the American League.
Cubs play at Wrigley Field in North Side Lake View, in Wrigleyville. The Cubs are the oldest Major League baseball team to never change their city, one of nine of the sixteen pre-expansion teams that did not change cities. They have been playing in Chicago since 1871, and have been playing continuously since 1874 due to the Great Chicago Fire. The White Sox play at Guaranteed Rate Field in the South Side neighborhood of Armor Square. They have played in Chicago since the formation of the American League in 1900.
The Cubs rivalry with the St. Louis Cardinals is one of the most bitter in North American professional sports. The Cubs are the oldest team to consistently play in the same city since the formation of the National League in 1876. They’ve played more games, scored more wins, and scored more runs than any other team in Major League Baseball since 1876. They have won three World Series titles and fourth among National League teams with 17 pennants. In 2016, the Cubs overcame two of the longest droughts in professional sports: they won their sport’s title for the first time since. 1908, 108 year drought, and competed in the World Series for the first time since 1945, 71 year drought.
The White Sox have played consistently on the South Side since 1901, and all three of their home fields have been within mere blocks of each other for many years. They have won three World Series titles (1906, 1917, 2005) and six American League pennants, including the first in 1901. The Sox are fifth in the American League in all-time wins and sixth in pennants.
